As first talked about on fox11online.com, the DNR is starting a new project to track the Walleye in the Winnebago.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is implanting adult walleye with sonic tags during electrofishing surveys on Lake Winnebago and the upper Fox River. When fish swim past acoustic receivers, the movement will be logged with the date and time. The DNR plans to download the data yearly to track the fish’s movements.
Receivers have been placed throughout the Winnebago System, including in the upper Fox River to Portage and in deep areas of Lake Winnebago. Anyone who catches a walleye with an implanted tag can receive a $100 reward in exchange for the tag, since the tags can be reused.
To report a tag, email a confirmation photo and catch information to DNRWINNEBAGOSYSTEMTAGRETURNS@wisconsin.gov or call 1-920-303-5429. You can also mail them to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
