UW System focuses on Phishing.

When Northeast Wisconsinsites plan on fishing, it’s usually on Lake Winnebago.

The Advance Titan has reported that the UW System is focused on another kind of fishing.

Phishing, spelled with a “P-h“ at the beginning, is the “fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers,” according to Merriam-Webster

Russian cyberattacks have continued to rise in numbers following the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine February 27th, and so have the number of phishing scams.

Chief information officer for the UW Oshkosh IT (Information Technology) department, Mark Clements notes that the Department of Homeland Security wants the public on alert and watching for these fishy emails as they may attempt to swindle from you things like usernames, passwords, or credit card information, which can be used to drain your accounts.

Those who may have experienced possible phishing or malicious and harmful cyber activity should contact the IT Help Desk, helpdesk@uwosh.edu as soon as possible.
